Description

From the Cortina bus station, take the cycle path towards San Vito di Cadore/Venice and continue for approximately 4 km until you arrive at the typical Ladin village of Zuel, a hamlet of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Here, at the junction with the state road, turn right towards Socus and continue until the next village of Campo di Sotto, follow the state road alongside Camping Dolomiti until the crossroads where you will see directions for Lake Pianozes, Rifugio Croda da Lago. Turn left and take the paved road which leads to the splendid Malga Federa along a long and challenging climb through the woods.

The mountain hut is found in an enchanting spot, in the middle of a clearing surrounded by the forest and then the mountains, with a fantastic view over the Ampezzo valley: the Croda da Lago and Becco di Mezzodì to one side, the Pomagagnon, Cristallo and Faloria to the other.

Here you are certain to see grazing cows, donkeys and horses and you can stop to enjoy delicious typical local dishes.

From here, anyone in good shape can continue to Rifugio Croda da Lago.

The road has very steep stretches that then become demanding descents upon return, only suited to real experts.

Alternatively, visitors can leave their bikes at the mountain hut and continue on foot for approximately 45 minutes to Lake Federa: the views will make the effort worth it.

On the way back, follow the road you took to get there until the junction with the state road and continue straight until you see the crossroads for the village of Campo.

Here, turn left and pass through the typical Ladin village until you find a track, known as “strada dell’ex polveriera” (named after the former gunpowder magazine) and follow it to the car park located below the Cortina cemetery.

Turn right towards the Church of the Madonna della Difesa, turn right once more and continue towards San Vito di Cadore/Venice for approximately 500 metres until the junction of Via Roma and Via Faloria.

Take Via Faloria until it meets the cycle path and then turn left to return to the departure point.
